PhD Thesis in 30 Years

August 30, 2007

Some famous guy from the band Queen is finishing up his PhD thesis in physics. He worked on it between 1971 and 1974, but postponed finishing it due to the band Queen taking off. He is awaiting his supervisors to approve it before he is granted his degree.
Although a good example of not giving [...]

Delay and Stardust

August 30, 2007

I haven’t been blogging recently because I’ve said that my next post would be about why it’s a bad idea to go into physics. It turns out that thinking about this takes lots of effort, and I need to be extremely bored and free to be able to write it.
I saw “Stardust” last weekend. I [...]

Julian Schwinger Being Funny

August 24, 2007

That 2-part series will have to wait for a time when I’m less preoccupied.
For now, I’d like to write an amusing passage from “The Second Creation” by Robert P. Crease and Charles C. Mann:
“…at the beginning of his third year, Glashow asked Schwinger to be his thesis adviser. So did eleven other students. To Schwinger’s [...]

Remember the Titans!

August 21, 2007

This one’s easy to recommend! I especially like Sunshine’s character. Lots of laugh out loud and feel good moments.
Ahhh, what a relief to see that kind of movie. Nice soundtrack!
This is my favorite Denzel Washington movie so far. His character in Glory is still my favorite!
My next 2 posts will be a 2-part series starting [...]

Philadelphia

August 20, 2007

The movie, not the city!
Man, I need to cut back on the serious movies. I got “Remember the Titans,” so that should be more lighthearted.
It was a good movie, but I don’t think I’d want to watch it if I were in a cheerful mood. Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors, so if [...]

Schindler’s List

August 19, 2007

What a POWERFUL movie. I was strongly moved on two accounts (read: misty eyed), which were very much aided by the poignant soundtrack.
Back when “The Pianist” came out, there were alot of reviews mentioning how there hasn’t been a good movie about the subject of the holocaust since “Schindler’s List.” I saw “The Pianist,” and [...]

Training Day

August 19, 2007

I’m an enthusiastic movie watcher, so I figure I should add a “movies” category on here so I can ramble about them. Just saw Training Day because of my recent obsession over Denzel Washington, which stemmed from watching “Glory,” which stemmed from watching “Letters from Iwo Jim” and “Flags of our Fathers.” (I liked “Letters” [...]

Burning Desire

August 18, 2007

When my advisor looks at the work I’ve done, and after he explains to me his thought process, I usually have burning questions to ask him. I really want to ask them…and I end up doing so. Except I haven’t really thought them through and more or less I could answer them myself if I [...]
